Do you often find yourself texting while driving? Or have you ever found yourself in moments where you wish your mobile phone would just reply your incoming texts without getting you involved? Well, automated texts are not exactly the newest thing around, but are there apps out there smart enough to actually take over for you when you’re driving, allowing you to focus solely on driving? OTTER does this, and not only that, it brings on the table a very neat Parental Control feature as well. So if you tend to text a lot while you drive, or you need an app that can generate automated replies for your incoming texts, OTTER is the way to go. The app is available on Android, Blackberry and Symbian phones right now and will soon be made available for iPhone and Windows Mobile devices as well. So let’s take a look into what the app has to offer and how it actually functions.

The app is actually quite simple to operate especially considering the tasks at hand. I’d say that the app has no fancy functions to offer with a rather simplistic UI, but the app serves its true purpose very well and you don’t really feel the need for any fancy options as long as it performs its core functions accurately. We take on the core features of OTTER one by one and walk you through it.

Manual Mode

When you first start the app notice the Enable Otter button, and enabling that will kick the app into manual mode. The manual mode actually lets you choose from a list of preset replies when answering an incoming text. The notifications from OTTER take control and display a popup display as shown in the screenshot above. So simply tap the reply of your choice and voila! Reply sent. This however was just an overview of how the app is laid out with respect to it’s functions. We’ll talk about the GPS Mode and Parental Controls in a bit, but right now we take a look into the Lists option and how it can serve you.

Lists basically houses your automatic replies and organized them into profiles. You can set a certain profile containing a list of up to 3 different replies for each list you add. To add a new profile, simple het the New button. After you have selected a profile, whenever your receive a text, you will see the replies added to that profile. This was all about the manual mode where you choose the replies you want.

Auto Reply & Timer

You might not find this option clearly labeled in the settings or anywhere and the developers should make this feature more apparent. For now however, you can enable auto replies by going to Manage Lists and keep a reply of your choice pressed. This will bring up the options as shown in the screenshot above on the left. If you want you can edit the reply there and then as well. To enable auto reply, tap Set Auto reply and you will be asked to set a timer for the auto reply to run. You can set the timer for a minimum of 10 minutes to a maximum of 12 hours. This feature flawlessly where sending a text from an iPhone to an Android resulted in a very speedy reply.

GPS Mode

GPS Mode is by far one of the most interesting feature of OTTER, where the app smartly detects via GPS if you’re in a moving car. Of course you could not be driving and still be in a moving car and if you still have this option enabled, it’s not meant for you. However, if you’re driving OTTER is smart enough to know if you’re actually moving or parked via GPS. If the app detects some speed, the automatic reply feature will kick in by itself and you will not have to worry about your texts not being replied. However if you’re parked, or stuck in traffic or on a red light, your apps will come in as normally as they do. Again, this function actually works without any issues whatsoever. You can also set a auto reply of your choice by hitting Driving Auto-Reply.

Parental Control

Parental Control as you might have already guessed, is where – if you’re a parent – you can lock up your kids phone to  the point where all primary incoming text notifications will be silenced and an automated reply will be sent. This feature works with the GPS mode, as you can see the GPS Mode is automatically enabled once Parental Controls is activated. From there onwards, it works the same as the GPS Mode described above, only you do not have the option to edit the replies or anything of that sort.

So if you want a simple app that manages all your incoming texts efficiently letting you focus on the task you’re occupied with, OTTER is available in three variants on the Android Market.
